Welcome to the Library Catalog Introduction, a Milligan College Library online tutorial!

What is this box?

This is an online guide that will introduce you to the Milligan College Library resources in real time on a live webpage.

Move through the guide by using the arrows at the bottom of the box.

Use the actual webpage to complete the guide activities.

The Milligan College Libraries catalog searches:

  • Print books
  • ebooks
  • DVDs
  • CDs
  • Archives

located in the P. H. Welshimer Memorial Library and Seminary Library. The catalog can also be used to locate these types of resources in libraries around the world. Once identified, you can request these items via Interlibrary Loan.

This tutorial will teach you how to search for items and then determine where they are located.

Let's get started!

Locating a specific item

To search the catalog: Click on the turquoise Books/Media tab above the MCSearch box

First we are going to search for a specific title.

Type: "Life on the Vine"

in the search box. Click the "Search" button.

The results list provides the best matches for this search in the two Milligan College Libraries.

At this point, only the brief record is displayed.

In the brief record, only one location is listed. But the Milligan College Libraries have more copies of this title.

To see the location of all the copies of the item, you need to see the full record. Click on the item title, "Life on the Vine".

Under Availability (you may need to scroll down), you will see how many copies of "Life of the Vine" are held by the Milligan College Libraries and where they are located.

True or false? There is a copy of "Life on the Vine" in the Seminary Lending collection.

To locate this item on the shelf, you would need the call number.

What is the call number for "Life on the Vine"?

To return to your results list, click on "View Filters" in the upper right hand corner next to the title.

Limiting to a specific library

You may want to search for an item in one of the two Milligan College Libraries, but not both.  It is easy to limit your search results to a particular location.

If you have not already done so, return to your results list, click on "View Filters" in the upper right hand corner next to the title. You may need to scroll up.

If you ONLY want to see holdings in the Seminary Library, click the box next to Seminary Library on the left hand side of the screen.

Again click on the title of the item, to see the full record of the Seminary holdings.

Locating items on a specific topic

Now we are going to look for all the items on a specific topic. We will use a very simple topic, but you can make it more complex.

Type: "Appalachian Trail"

in the search box at the top of the screen. Click the magnifying glass icon.

The result list contains all the items in the two Milligan College Libraries AND libraries worldwide.

How many items are there about the "Appalachian Trail" in libraries around the world?

Note: Items held by the Milligan College Libraries are at the top of the list, even if they are not the best match for the topic.

If you want to find the best matches for your search regardless of the location, go to Sorted by: next to the number of results. Click the down arrow next to "Library". Select "Best Match". Check out the other sorting options that may better suit your purposes. Many of these items would need to be requested via Interlibrary Loan.  Please see the tutorial, "Interlibrary Loan" to learn more about it.

Results can also be filtered by format, language, date and other ways by using the filters on the left hand side of the page. Scroll down to see additional filtering options.
