Interlibrary Loan: An Introduction
This guide shows how to use the Library's Interlibrary Loan service to request books and media from other libraries when they are not available in the Milligan University Libraries collection.
For periodical materials (newspaper, magazine and journal articles), please use OneSearch.
We recommend completing two other tutorials:
Introduction to OneSearch
OneSearch: Advanced Strategies
so that you are familiar with searching for resources on the Milligan University Libraries website.
Let's get started!
With interlibrary loan, you have access to literally millions of print and digital resources from thousands of libraries around the United States and the world! Whatever Milligan doesn't have, we will do our best to help you find it and borrow it for no cost to you.
Now, let's find an item to request through interlibrary loan!
On the Milligan Libraries website, choose the blue Books/Media tab above the OneSearch box.
In the search box TYPE:
"Say nothing: a true story" (including the "")
Click the Search button or press enter.
If you are off-campus, you will be prompted to log in. Use your Milligan Network ID and password, the same one you use for Canvas.
How many results did you get for "Say Nothing: A True Story"?
For this title, Milligan Libraries does not own it. If you wanted this item, we would need to borrow it for you from another library. This process is called Interlibrary Loan (or I-L-L for short).
Print books, DVDs and CDs can be requested through interlibrary loan. E-books typically cannot.
Click on this item:
To request this item, click on the button that says Request via Interlibrary Loan under Availability.
A new tab will open with the citation information showing. Scroll down to the colored form fields. Fill out the required fields following the directions. Use only your Milligan email address. If you have any special requests or concerns (for example, a certain edition) fill in the Comments field.
PLEASE NOTE: For purposes of this tutorial, do NOT click on the Submit button to request Say nothing : a true story of murder and memory in Northern Ireland. This will create a false request.
However, if you are learning how to request an item and have located one that you would like to borrow, complete your request and click on the Submit button. A green confirmation box will appear with a confirmation number. To return to Guide on the Side close the tab.
Congratulations! You have requested an item through Interlibrary Loan.
